To further clarify what Dave said, at the WW&F we started out with 35-lb rail on our mainline, and started with a 2-foot on center tie spacing. Upon reflection years later one of our early volunteers stated that perhaps we should have gone with a tighter spacing on the ties, maybe 20" on center, because of difficulty keeping good track on that section.

We now use 60-lb rail, and continue to use 2-foot on center ties.
