Dec 26, 1956 the 1151 2-8-0 had its fire dropped for the last time in Alamosa ending standard gauge steam on the D&RGW.

Stam did die in Salida with the standard gauging of Monarch branch.

I believe the last stronghold of standard gauge steam in heavy usage was in helper service from Tabernash to Moffat Tunnel. Several L-131 L-132 2-8-8-2's were kept there for helpers. I think that ended mid Oct of 1956.
