Grant,
The 100 miles between Chama and Durango has been a lamented for years. Many wanted to keep it with the rest of the ex-D&RGW. It was abandoned in 1968 because it was not econimically viable.
To rebuild it today, we HAVE to show that it would be economically viable today.
We might determine that there is no economic reason to spend money on rebuilding the line.
Instead of arguing with emotions, let's find out the facts and argue with the facts.
John Bush's comment about the former RGS line is very well taken. It does have more spectacular scenery than the missing 100 miles.
I think there is more support to connect Chama and Durango than to rebuild the RGS, but I do not know. However, let's first examine the 100 miles and if it turns out not to be viable, then maybe we look into the RGS proposal.
I think it would be easier to connect Chama and Durango and get the use of existing operator's experience and equipment than it would be to start a new railroad from the ground up.
Doug.
