Based on the sized of the ties compared to the mules and the people in the picture I would say they are standard gauge ties. As to why the ties would be hand-hewn in 1902 rather than being handled in a mill I can not say. The original post says "Note on back says 'Uncle Oliver and Uncle Jim. 1902 or 1903 cutting ties for the Denver and Rio Grande'"
