One of the features of the Harzquerbahn back in the days was the coal train to the power station at Silberhutte. It was normally double headed. The coal arrived in standard gauge wagons and was transported on roll wagons.

The Brocken mountain was the site of a Russian radar and listening post. The railway circled the mountain to gain elevation and would pass from East Germany to West Germany and back to East Germany. There were large steel doors at the border crossing. Coal and supplies were periodically brought up by train.

Of course, such a photo could not have been taken back in the old days!
