Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the cars were used to haul asphalt after the boom. Crude won't turn into tar, however asphalt WILL become too thick to pump or drain out of the car. The asphalt isn't usually heated in transit, but heated after arrival with steam from a local standpipe. And by spraying steam on the tank car body. Which is probably why the cars remained so clean...
