The last photo in Bret's post shows the back of the throttle, on the bench for lapping. Here are some more shots for those who wonder what a dome throttle for a saturated steam locomotive looks like.
Lapping throttle with a special made handle to provide leverage to turn the heavy spool casting.
This is the spool showing the 2 angled sealing faces (to the right).
This is the interior of the throttle body, looking at the sealing faces top and bottom.
It was in fairly good condition and only took a couple of hours to lap. Still, quite a bit of boring work turning to the right and then to the left.
