All I know is what is in CRRA #11 and Best's "Mexican Narrow Gauge" (1968) so I'm no help.

I'd guess September, 1930 when the Ouray branch passenger went to being a mixed.

For a greater challenge, when was the last time a Class 42 4-4-0 used on the Ouray Branch? Obviously before 1908.

Was 168 used out there?

Possably. She was on the 3rd Divison in the late 1920's/early 1930's, ran the last train on the Lake City branch, etc. Most pictures of that era I've seen have 169 or 172 but 168 could have been in the mix. Note that after the line to Grand Jct was Fat gauged in 1906 the equipment from trains 315/316 ran from Gunnison through to Ouray, although the train number changed at Montrose much of the time, until 1930.
