The plan was always to do a proper, earlier restoration of the car in the era when red paint was the norm. So many of these cars have been restored to the later 'black' era that the museum wants to do one in the earlier era right. The museum actually cannot part it out because in a technical sense they don't own it - it and several other pieces of equipment, including the NCNG 2-6-0 #5, are part of their lease from Universal Studios. It wouldn't be theirs to part out.

It falling apart is probably just as well; most of the wood was going to end up having to be replaced. Perhaps the inner sills are still good.
