I read somewhere that "planished steel" was made by taking high quality steel and that an experienced metal worker gently strikes the metal with a planish hammer time after time. This striking was supposed to make the steel extremely hard and resistant to rust and produce a grayish blue color to the metal. Supposedly it was quite and art to do this.
