I've heard the same thing.
A good friend of mine who grew up behind the Iron Curtain in the former Czechoslovakia accordingly refers to SG as "Western gauge".
It's interesting that there's another break of gauge on the other end of the Eurasian continent on the Mongolian-Chinese border, where Moscow-Beijing trains still swap trucks.
