Yes Ernie had some stuff in 1968 in Monero and both sides of there.
John is spot on though as far as our experiences. In 1966 we chased the 484 from Durango as far as Goto. It had two water cars, so I don't know if that was as far as it went, or it was going on toward Chama. In either case we left for Pagosa Springs. In 1968 when we chased 498 on freight bound for Chama, we got it coming into Gato for Water, and we headed for Chama, via the main road through Pagosa. There was no attempt to get anything east of Gato, not even when we got near Chama. I have a feeling we were told the train would be so late that it was going to be dark, so dad figured mom could use a break, and we could get set-up for the next day. The appeal was the Cumbres climb, so we got 498 departing Chama headed west, then shot 483 and 493 pusher to Cumbres, then down to Los Pinos, and drove to Antonito to chase helper 493.
I think we thought about chasing 498 west a ways, but were afraid we would miss the big show from Chama-Cumbres. I have no regrets other than the fact we tried to wait for the next westbound from Alamosa, and never saw it.
