Begining in 1937, the "Shavano" (Trains 315 and 316) ran with the newly rebuilt equipment (vestibules) between Salida and Gunnison. West of Gunnison, the older open platform cars were used between Gunnison and Montrose. Regular passenger service west of Gunnison ended in 1936. However, it was reinstateed in the summer of 1944 after a truck damaged a highway bridge near Sapinero, shutting down through highway traffic on Route 50. The "Shavano" service ended on November 24, 1940 due to poor patronage and its equipment transfered to the "San Juan" servive between Alamosa and Durango. "Shavano" Parlor Cars "Gunnison" and "Salida" were sold to Mexico at that time. I suspect the open platform cars pictured in 1940 were there for an excursion.
