Jeff,

I believe there is a photo by Richardson or Krause from scrapping time that does show an ash pit on east wye track. The shot was, I believe, from the coaling trestle.

i have yet to locate the photo... I'm thinking either in the Trails along the Columbine, or American Narrow Gauge.

If I remember, it was only a pit between the rails. If this was the case, it is easy to see why they probably just dumped it on the tracks... it would be a lot easier clean up!
