The extension from Leadville, over Tennessee Pass, to Glenwood Springs and Aspen was built narrow gauge (with standard gauge ties) in order to beat the Colorado Midland into Aspen. There was a temporary narrow gauge line built over Tennessee Pass which was later replaced by the tunnel.

That is a great shot showing the SG ties and the NG track
