Thanks, Rich! It appears as if the observation site is different than the one that I see just north of the underground water cistern at Cumbres. I guess I need to do more walking around up there? As noted previously, the gauge that I see looks abandoned. It is the tall, pipe-like device that is surrounded on top by a fence-like wind screen.
Interesting that the site is maintained by the USDA. I would have thought that either NOAA or the USFS would have owned it. Reading the notes on the website, it appears as if the instrumentation is regularly maintained, and that they also keep temperature records there. Back in the day, that would have required one of those little, white instrument shelters and a set of liquid-in-glass maximum and minimum thermometers. It would also have required an observer. Now, with electronics that approach the accuracy of mercury thermometers, and sophisticated telemetry, inhospitable sites like Cumbres no longer need to be manned.
Neat stuff!! Thanks!!
