As I understand it (I could not go on the charter), the backhoe was unplanned and added at the last minute for operational necessity, one of those inconvenient real railroading realities. But it was only hauled to Big Horn (to help clear the wye) so there was plenty of plowing (and pix) west of Big Horn with a more or less historically accurate consist. But the concept of running a charter with a Cumbres and Toltec work train has plenty of merit in its own right. And offers some possibilities that a recreation might not. The challenge is that some folks will only come for a historic recreation, while those that might be happy with a C&TS train will do both. And you usually need both to make the economics work.
