Speaking of cabsize, there is a video of one of the 2-10-2s in operation with only one crewman, the engineer.

These locomotives had automatic stokers so perhaps the "management" did not see the need for to pay for a fireman.

I could be totally wrong, the cameraman could have been the fireman, but given the size of the space to work, it seemed possible.
