In reading 1890's magazines, there was a switch with points, but they were shorter and didn't move. They were in gauge with the appropriate running rail, with a flange width gap from the other rail. A set of movable guard rails in front of the points forced the wheels one way or another.

I haven't seen a drawing or photo yet, but I'll keep looking.
