Perlman Era. He made his initial rep by rebuilding the Q's mainline in Western Nebraska in jig time after some major floods(1936?). One of the reasons he got it done so fast was his extensive use of off-track equpment instead of work trains. Ever after, from what I've read, he was against the use of work trains or old-fashioned, on track, work equipment for *any* situation.
Somewhere in one of Bob Richardson's writings he tells of somebody celebrating Perlman's departure by taking the Jorden out and doing a bunch of bank work west of Chama that he hadn't been allowed to do by Big Al.
