The (tiny) diamond section is non-functional, purely decorative. I like the description that, as an attempt to make them look "old-timey" it was as effective as making a '65 Mustang look like a Model T by putting brass-rimmed headlights on it.

As a little kid in the 1960's I just accepted them. By the 1970's, as a teen-ager I sneered at them as phoney. I cheered in the 1980's when I heard that the new owner had sh*t-canned them.

But now I sorta miss them...
