It seems unique to the WP&Y, although I guess there are probably other lines where they were numbered that way. A lot of lines just numbered their cars right after each other because they didn't have very many. Others like the D&RG had series for each car type, although they originally had conflicting numbers such as having a #1 express car, mail car, baggage car, coach, business car, etc.
Thanks for the correction about the SV combine. Have there been any well written books about the WP&Y that cover equipment in some detail?
