ALCO built the ten K-28's for the D&RGW in 1923. The US Army requisitioned seven for use on the WP&Y in 1942, all were returned to the states after the war, all were scrapped. The three retined by the D&RGW went on to the D&SNG with the sale of the Silverton branch.
But there were at least four others. ALCO built four nearly identical 2-8-2's for the Oahu Railway and Land Co. OR&L 60 and 70 were built in 1925, 80 and 90 in 1926. The differences - OR&L burned oil, so the tenders on several didn not have the higher coal boards, and the Oahu engines had smaller air pumps on the fireman's side of the boiler instead of the smokebox front mounted cross-compound air pumps on the D&RGW K-28's. OR&L abandoned most of its trackage in 1948, and retired Nos. 70, 80, and 90 then. No 60 was stored until 1966 then cut up.
