Just a wild guess, Dave -
But judging from the relationship of the butte above the town and the cliff below it - which appears further to the right in your "now" photo - IMHO the first photo was taken from much farther away and a bit higher up. That pile of rocks probably still exists, but was two hundred yards or more behind you on 09/13/14 ...
