Thanks for the info Mallory. I suspected as much, but wondered why the diameter is so much less than the beartrap stacks that I was used to?

I'm also curious what was inside the mesh that guided the cinders into the pipe?

"This allowed cinders to accumulate in the pipe until thay could be dumped in a safe place"

I don't see any indication of the bottom being sealed - what kept the cinders in the pipe?

Thanks for the photos - they're strikingly similar.
