While not an exact answer to prototype modeling I redecked Grant line and Blackstone flat cars with wooden coffee stir sticks that were cut lengthwise in half. I used used ones already stained with coffee. Add a little thinned burnt and raw sienna , India ink and grey streaking and they look weathered. mktjames cheap modeling with real dirt and wood
