D&RGW #271 was a yard switcher in Durango about 1940 and was rented to Montezuma Lumber Co. in mid summer 1941 and sold to them near the end of that year. On June 18, 1942, Otto Perry took several photos of it at McPhee, (see page 471 and 472 of RGS Story Volume VII) which then show a long cable from the fireman cab to a lever and cross bar on the pilot. What did this bar control? It seem to have been added by the lumber company in that year. Was it to open a coupler, or control a flanger blade (not seen) or open a cinder trap on the bottom of the steam chest?
