Yeah, I noticed the discrepancy in the hills after I got home. The cab roof of one locomotive breaks the skyline and looks like a ridge jutting up and this confused me for some time. There's a series of photos of the wreck on page 15 of George Turner's Slim Rails Through The Sand. Basically, the lead engine derailed going through the deep cut and the road engine tried to push past it. The Fireman of the lead engine was injured badly enough he died shortly after the accident.
