This is typical newspaper hyperbole. I went over this line in the in the 1970s and I wouldn't say it was steep or winding. The main line from Old Mission to Wallace climbs about 600' in twenty odd miles following the Coeur d'Alene River. The line to Burke is steeper, climbing 1,000' in seven or eight miles, but not in the same class as the Uintah.
