The diesel is patterned after the Areotrain that General Motors demonstrated in the late 1950s. There were two trains that ended up on the Rock Island and used in commuter service out of Chicago. EMD built a third locomotive that went to the Rock Island to power an ACF built Talgo trainset also in commuter service.

There is a Wikipedia article about the Areotrain and it includes mention of the operation at Disneyland and also the Zooliner train.
