Could it have been purchased early on by a private collector and so disappeared from public view?
I'm reminded of the strange case of SR&RL caboose 558, the cupola end of which was chopped off and is reported to be in some lucky railfan's den in New Jersey. (I'm not making this up.) I only hope it makes it to a museum someday.
It's exciting when pieces like this reemerge -- that is assuming it's the real thing and not a replica.
