I recall there was a screening process, and of course some properties did not pass muster. Antonito's choices were only the NG RR Inn and Conejos Ranch. NG RR Inn was pretty dumpy and Conejos Ranch was eager to send a van down to pick up the passengers.
In Chama the only two in walking distance were the Shamrock and Fosters. Neither were nice then. River Bend sent a van down to pick up folks.
The NG RR Inn was one of the primary complainers.
I rode the train a few years back when IPH was trying to get the operating contract. We did an overnight deal staying at The (Shamrock) Hotel. The RR did not have any program for overnighting and I ended up buying two full round trips and not taking the bus portion. It wasn't cheap, but my employer paid the bill, so I did it.
