Pile Bent versus Timber Bent trestles

What were the general factors that determined if trestles were made with pile bents or timber bents? I realize that height and pile driver availability would limit pile bents but what other factors were there? Was one any better and/or cheaper then the other? Is one an earlier or later practice then the other? The Uintah had all pile bent trestles and I have drawings for both types for the D&RG.
