Thank you so much BCP for the pictures and measurements. These sort of confirm my measuring of photos. especially the 45" smoke box on the standard 42-2 class. I suspect the gaps come from years of hard use along with all the welding. Grandt's plan for this boiler type show it seated tight in the frame rails. Im not surprised you see a taper toward the backhead, I figured it might have had it to some degree but I cant model something that minor.
I am going to build either MSP#4 or Manns creek #2(wich was converted from std to 36" gauge)
My big brain buster comes down the later boiler type used on all the classes of shays, specifically the 42-2 Michcal 15 and Manns creek #8. See the profile drawing on the first post.
I am trying to figure out how to make the contour of the boiler under the steam dome and the rear sloping sheet.
I belive the height of the boiler at the steam dome is 57"
Im thinking about maybe using the 4 1/8th tubing I have and layering the top with sheets to build it up, but I kidna don't think that would be right.
Another Idea would be, if I was sure it had a 50" fire box like the other standard 42-2 class did, then I could use the 1 1/18th tubing and just wrap the whole thing in layers and taper it up to the steam dome.
Sorry to obsess about this, but I consider myself a rivet counter and the amount of work I am going to put into these couple of models I want them to be as accurate as possible, and this slope on the boiler is very noticeable and distinctive as Manns Creek #8 is one of kind using this later boiler type.
