Jeff's: That first shot of the 401 is unique in lots of ways. First, it does show an 11" pump and we know the engine later had two 9 1/2" pumps - not a normal transition, since the single 11 was nearly as good as twin 9 1/2's. It has Denver & Rio Grande
Western on the tank sides on a strip of what looks like new paint yet still has it's old number of 401. Lo and behold, the renumbering didn't place immediately with the name change. The photo has to have been taken in 1923 or 1924 as this was the height of the changeover from D&RG to D&RGW.
Notice too the square box headlights. Very few 2-8-0's got round headlights and even fewer got the ones with the angled side number boards yet very few model builders have done this older style of light.
