I don't know what the Red Cliff stand mechanism looks like, but targets on a staff like you describe were used all over the Rio Grande system, NG and SG. You will still find them in the San Luis Valley and up the Creede Branch.

When the switch is lined for the main, the green diamond is seen when looking down the track, and when it is lined diverging, the red round is seen. The shapes were for times when the stand was backlit by the sun and color was hard to see.
