'Twas a hazard back in the steam days in the US, where operators had to stand near the track to hand up train orders, One tower I worked had three mainlines crossing, one was on a curve, and it was always freaky handing up to them as you were on the outside of the curve. --- One time years ago, an operator handed up to the head end, but when the rear end came around the curve, said operator was laying in the ballast. Turns out a lump of coal fell off the tender and knocked him out.
