They say only God can make a tree, and he ain't doin' so well anymore, but seriously, Car 280's condition shows the need to keep wooden cars under shelter, even in dry Colorado. Steel equipment rusts quickly also, and it's unlikely a new generation will take up the cause of constant grinding, scraping and painting. A roof helps a lot, a building is better and climate-controlled storage is best. Baldwin No. 60000 at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia was last painted in 1933 and still looks OK. Southern 1401 in DC, last painted in 1961, is still immaculate. We'll probably never get everything under cover, but it should be a goal.
