The PIN operated north from Weiser ID (pronounced Weezer) through Washington and Adams Counties generally following the Weiser River to Tamarack; then crossed a low divide to terminate in the Meadows Valley (New Meadows) near the headwaters of the Little Salmon River. Built to serve the copper mining boom in the Seven Devils country along the east side of Hells Canyon, but the proposed connection to the mines, the Seven Devils Railroad, was never built. The PIN, later OSL (UP) then Idaho Northern & Pacific, became a carrier of agricultural and timber products until 1995 when closure of the large Boise-Cascade mill at Council brought about its abandonment.
I live about 50 miles from the southern terminus at Weiser. My mother's family has deep roots in Washington County, and the history of this railroad and the region have always been of interest to me. The Utah Rails Site has
a brief history of the line.
