As John said, the pipes are indeed the steam supply from the turret (or main fountain) to the injector/inspirator steam rams. For a good view, check out Mr.Dorman's book "Durango" where he shows Andy Payne's view of the 473. This turret also supplies steam to the blower valve, air compressor, hydrostatic lubricator, and dynamo. It also delivered steam (for back up only) to the power reversers on the 473 and 478 when they were so equipped. The very top center of the fountain has a main shut off valve to use when it is desired to work on the supply lines/valves when the engine is under steam.
