Ah-HA! NOW I get it!!
The Durango shop crew "borrowed" the right-side stencil from Alamosa sometime in the fifties so they could re-letter the 470's - which by that time were used almost exclusively on the Silverton branch - whenever necessary. Alamosa was left with only the left-side stencil for use on any of the bigger engines that had their tenders re-painted from then on, such as #487 in the mid- or late fifties, #497 sometime later, and #481 in the summer or fall of 1968.
Mystery Solved, and no minds - left OR right - are blown ...
- Sincerely,
Willie (Wm. Claude Johnson-Barr III, Esq.)
