The Ridgway Railroad Museum and the Ouray County Historical Society are in the process of rebuilding the Silverton Railroad's Guston Depot on Red Mountain. We have received an easement from the property owner allowing us to rebuild it and a guarantee of public access. We are using the measurements made by John Robinson and the Plans drawn by Brian Adams in the early 1970s. We have now spent two full work days up there with a crew of eight people: Karl Schaeffer, Don Paulson, Tom Hillhouse, Stuart Hurrah, Reid Henry, Dudley Case, Chris Weiser and Rod Bunyard. The pictures attached show the progress we have made. All visible sections of the platform base have original cut nails recovered from the site. The decking is being applied with new cut nails. The attached photos show the depot site in 1970 (photo courtesy of Jerry Hoffer),in June of 2012, and the progress made as of July 11, 2014. Note the original pice of real 2 x 8 wood used on the decking.
