My friend Jim Pearce was a young fireman in Durango in 1951 and spent several nights watching the movie train engines at Rockwood. One night he was hauled into MP 475 (where Tall Timber is now located) to watch the engines. The movie company had created it's end of track camp there. He dutifully watched 345 and 319 overnight and as he was walking to the speeder that would take him back to his car that he left at Rockwood one of the movie-types said "I'm glad nothing happened overnight. Both of those engines are loaded up with black powder for the wreck we're shooting today. There's two engines you won't have to worry about after today..."
Jim's knees went weak at the thought of working around all that explosive that night and how a stray spark from a shovel against the fire door might have sent him into eternity. When he got to Durango and mark off duty he asked if anyone knew what was going on up there with the engines. The answer was "beats me...I have no idea".
They found out that night.
