One of the great things about the narrow gauge is how it emphasizes the anachronism and incredible rate of change that the 20th century encompassed. People were still shoveling coal into steam engines when the Mercury / Gemini / Apollo programs were inventing whole fields in metallurgy, chemistry, electronics, and computing to build spaceflight.
My grandfather remembered horse travel, saw the Wright brothers demonstrate an aircraft, saw the flying aircraft carrier USS Macon, lived through the second world war, and saw men land on the moon. All in one lifetime!?!
And what do I get? Facebook, Twitter, and 300 channels of junk.
I'll be in my basement playing trains.
