Roger, you said:
"The Uintah Railway built and maintained the telegraph line from Dragon to Vernal and to Ft. Duchesne, and one winter, the poles had to be replaced with iron posts as many of the frieghters were not making it across the desert in one day, and had to stop for the night......... well, what are you going to burn in a camp fire...... the only wood in fifty miles, so down came the lines."
The US Army built a telegraph line into Ft, Duchesne using steel pipe poles with a single pin and insulator mounted in the hole of the top. These poles were 2.5" inch pipe, and also sported a solid 3/4" rod stuck through the pole and welded, leaving a 12" footpeg on each side for a lineman to stand on. I have one of these complete poles, but your info makes me wonder if there is more to the story than soldiers and indian wars? Got any good pix or other details? B.
