The original railroad was the Rusk Tramway built from Rusk to the IG&N in Jacksonville. They built a railroad with wooden rails covered with strap iron. They had a little Porter-Bell 0-4-0 with tender. It was a dismal failure. The ROW and charter were sold to the Kansas & Gulf Shortline Who made it part of their line from Tyler to Lufkin. That later became the Tyler Southeastern, then standard gauged and taken over by the Cotton Belt. The original 1.5 mile spur from the K&GSL to the iron works at the Rusk prison was NG, then rebuilt to SG when the mainline through town was SG'd. A borrowed NG engine from the Texas & St. Louis was used until the SG was completed.
