I was walking the RG&PS grade north of Chromo ,20 miles south of Pagosa on a beautiful fall day 20 years ago . I was grumbling to myself "I never find ANYTHING " ,then looked at an oval sticking out of the Gambel oak leaves .I thought it might be a buffer plate from a class 56 2-8-0 (oval and heavy) I picked it up .It was light ! It was a a valve oil can ,with a plate saying D&RG brazed near the top . It must have been tossed when its spout started to sepatate from the can (it was still on the can). It had been there a while ,since the line was closed in 1916 . It still had a little oil on the bottom . Gordon Chappelle tried to buy it from me . It on display in the Coker Ralroad Museum . Oh ,what treasures are hidden in the brush and leaves !
