This maight make it easier to compare:
I matched up the background for this fade in/out animation. The nearby hill to the left seems to be too small in the newer photo, so I suspect that the old photo was taken from a point in front of where Bill was standing for the new photo. The siding with the boxcars seems to be right against the hillside (notice how it appears that the hill was cut to accommodate it), while the boxcars in the new photo seem to be farther from the hill, and the telegraph pole is fatter in the old photo. These also seem to indicate that the original photographer was farther forward. It's possible that the pole in the photo is a different one.
It's really hard to get these then-and-now photos to line up perfectly, and I've found that the only way to do it is to bring a computer along so each attempt can be overlaid with the old photo to see if the spot was right. On my first attempt to get a perfect overlay, I thought I found the exact spot where Clinton Scott stood over 100 years before, but when I got home and overlaid them, I found that I wasn't even close. Fortunately, that was a Morrison photo, and the spot is only about 10 minutes from home so I was able to go back and try again. This Baldwin photo was pretty good for lining it up just using the old photo.
