David,
Concerning the boiler jacket on the 168 in Colorado Springs I was attempting to replicate with paint the look of "russia iron". The traeted metal was highly reflective. It seems to have had a variety of base colors including everything from blue like stove pipe to silvery. the common element was it's reflectivity. Since the primary element outdoors is sky the apparent color is blue. That was the rationale for the metallic blue automotive paint I applied. I am glad you liked it.
