There was a Standard Gauge Board, a Narrow Gauge Board and an Extra Board. You could bid on any one according to your seniority. The most senior men went to the SG board (bigger engines = more money), while the younger guys worked the NG Board. The exception being the San Juan which general went to the #3 and #4 engineers (#'s 1 and 2 held down the Alamosa-La Veta passenger). The youngest guys hung out on the extra board. The Creede Branch was called off the SG Board and any trains to Antonito regardless of what gauge equipment got called off the NG Board. All the boards, including Durango, worked off the same seniority roster. So, if you lived in Durango and thought you could work more in Alamosa, you could bid on a job over there. There were a couple of engineers who did this, Bill Holt being one of them.
